Never Give Up!

Diana Nyad has just completed an amazing feat of endurance and perseverance. To try and put it into perspective, imagine going without sleep for 53 hours.
Now imagine walking for 110 miles during those 53 hours.
Finally, instead of walking, imagine swimming 110 miles in shark and jellyfish infested, open ocean during those 53 hours. It belies belief.
And yet, Diana has just accomplished this historic feat. It was her fifth attempt, trying first in 1978 and then again with three other starts between 2010 and 2012.
Upon reaching the shore in Key West today, it took Diana a few minutes to find the strength to speak. When she did, she said three things:
- Never, ever give up
- You are never too old to chase your dreams
- Some think this is a solitary sport. It’s not. It takes a team.
I walked 25 miles in a single day a couple of times in college and I once roller skated for 24 hours. But I cannot begin to imagine the feat that Diana Nyad just accomplished. Oh, and she just happens to be a sprite 64 years old.
Check out the You Tube video of her first moments on shore or this Reuters’s overview of her swim.
Amazing! What did you do this weekend?
